Patrick Hanaway, MD
PATRICK HANAWAY, MD, is a board-certified family physician with his medical degree from Washington University and residency training at the University of New Mexico. Dr. Hanaway is Chief Medical Education Officer for The Institute for Functional Medicine. He is currently on loan from IFM, working under the leadership of Dr. Mark Hyman, as the Medical Director of the Center for Functional Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. He is involved in developing the clinical model, supporting comparative effectiveness research, and promoting education change at the medical school, residency programs, and CME at the Cleveland Clinic.
Kristi Hughes, ND - Director of Medical Education - Institute of Functional Medicine
Dr. Kristi Hughes is a graduate of National College of Naturopathic Medicine. She opened her natural medicine practice in 1997, began her training in Functional Medicine in 2000, and has been attending IFM programs ever since. Dr. Hughes manages a naturopathic Functional Medicine residency program, lectures internationally on lifestyle and Functional Medicine, and has a passion for changing medicine.
As Director of Medical Education at IFM, Dr. Hughes works with the Functional Nutrition content and has been involved in the updated IFM toolkit. Since joining IFM in 2010, Dr. Hughes has supported the Detox, Cardio, and Energy Modules, participated in organizing multiple Annual International Conferences, teaches in the AFMCP course, works with collaborating partners, and is involved in international education program

Dr Kara Fitzgerald
Dr. Fitzgerald received her doctorate of naturopathic medicine from National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon. She completed the first CNME-accredited post-doctorate position in nutritional biochemistry and laboratory science at Metametrix (now Genova) Clinical Laboratory under the direction of Richard Lord, Ph.D. Her residency was completed at Progressive Medical Center, a large, integrative medical practice in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Fitzgerald is lead author and editor of Case Studies in Integrative and Functional Medicine, a contributing author to Laboratory Evaluations for Integrative and Functional Medicine and the Institute for Functional Medicine’s updated Textbook for Functional Medicine. She has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Fitzgerald is on faculty at the Institute for Functional Medicine, and is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. She was formerly on faculty at University of Bridgeport in the School of Human Nutrition and the School of Naturopathic Medicine. She is a clinician researcher for The Institute for Therapeutic Discovery. Dr. Fitzgerald regularly lectures internationally for several organizations and is in private practice in Sandy Hook, Connecticut.
